Vafes – Mythos of Cool Springs

On this easy half-day tour we will carry you off to the secret wonders of Crete. Our starting point is the sleepy Venetian hill-settlement of Vafes which still breathes the spirit of Medievial days. From the beginning we enjoy wide views of the White Mountains and the fertile foothills “Madares” in the green region of Krio Nerida which –almost poetically – means “Cool Waters”. During the first kilometres of our bike ride we cross through cultivated olive groves, figs and mulberry trees, walnuts and giant shady oaks.

After the village of Vrisses (Greek: fountain) our route takes us through a cool and quiet cypress forest, one of the last remaining forests in Crete which lies at low altitude. In the center of this woodland we stop at a chapel which is dedicated to the “Holy Spring” that gives life to all the green. Enjoying the breeze on a longer downhill passage we reach Stylos where we can find refreshment under huge fragrant eucalyptus trees.

Coffee, fresh orange juice or simply the famous Samaria table water, which is bottled in Stylos, revive us for the last adventurous cycling part. Entering a subtropical garden landscape we are sourrounded by orange, lemon and avocado trees before we follow the Koiliaris River (one of the longest rivers of Crete with 36 km) along its overgrown dam towards the North Coast.
